Vine Caffe Restaurant and Bar Moray St

Vine Caffe Restaurant and Bar Moray St

A great modern bistro with Italian flair, Vine offers a cafe menu during the day and modern Italian dishes with provincial specials at night. The dark polished wood furniture and chocolate leather banquettes complement the renaissance-style artworks and add to the Italian bistro feel. The field mushroom bruschetta is a tasty variation on a familiar starter while dishes like the gnocchi in a Napolitana sauce with sheep's milk ricotta are excellent to follow. Despite the modern twist on the food, the service has all the traditional warmth and welcome that one expects in a good Italian restaurant.

New Farm Cafe Brunswick St

New Farm Cafe Brunswick St

New Farm Cafe has been serving good quality Italian, deli style breakfasts and lunches to locals for over 14 years. The wonderful aromas from the kitchen waft between the tables inside and there are two outdoor areas to dine al fresco. The service is as good as the food, which makes it rather hard to get a table for lunch or weekend brunch. Book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Dell’Ugo New Farm Brunswick Street

Dell’Ugo New Farm Brunswick Street

Dell’ Ugo serves cut-above, authentic Italian dishes in a buzzy dining block along New Farm’s major approach road. It absorbs the character of the street, so it’s fun and lively on a Friday evening – it’s not the place for a love tryst – and at lunchtime more redolent of Italy: vital and indulgent. Although the mood is open and inclusive, part of the dining area can be enclosed around a square table for a group of up to 22. Daily specials such as linguine alla vongole are recommended because the star ingredients always shine. That said, it would be a shame not to explore the menu. Past items such as duck maryland, stuffed with shallots and muscatels, in a honey-and-star anise broth, give you some idea. Professional service adds to the outing.

Biagio Brunswick Street

Biagio Brunswick Street

An injection of fresh energy will hit Red Hill’s dining scene in July, as new owners rebrand the restaurant that once housed the Fish Grotto. Chef Biagio Biuso, originally from Sicily, comes to us from Zolli’s Trattoria, Townsville. He and wife Sarah have given their new restaurant a smart, elegant fit-out featuring a black marble bar, white linen tablecloths and black leather chairs. The a la carte menu will focus on seafood, and Biagio’s pasta al pistachio (with crispy pancetta) comes recommended.

Bellaggio Woodfired Pizzeria and Ristorante Brunswick Street

Bellaggio Woodfired Pizzeria and Ristorante Brunswick Street

With a little taste of Italy in every dish, Bellagio has stood the test of time in New Farm and is a popular spot for both newcomers and return diners. The interior of the restaurant is spacious and has a great open window looking onto Brunswick Street, perfect for a sultry Brisbane summer afternoon. The restaurant is comprised of indoor, outdoor and courtyard dining sections, and can cater for up to 200 people. The kitchen is made complete with a traditional wood-fired oven as its centrepiece. It burns western Ipswich ironbark which sets the oven at the necessary temperature while adding a unique taste to the pizzas. The traditional method of preparing these signature pies has remained intact and is just as important as the careful selection of toppings coupled with the right balance of quantity. All too often a pizza’s real flavour can be lost among a myriad of over-compensating toppings, leaving your tastebuds not quite sure which flavour was what. Here the bases are made daily and according to an authentic recipe – the result is a thin, crispy and delectable base that complements the fresh ingredients well.

Diners can choose from a range of interesting Italian-style antipastos and breads to kick off their meal. One starter of particular interest is the prosciutto, melone e ricotta fritta which is comprised of prosciutto crudo served with fresh rockmelon balls alongside deep-fried ricotta and rocket. Follow with a mazzicante pizza with provolone, truffle oil and mushrooms, or the nonno nicola with salsa pomodoro, mozzarella, funghi, grilled zucchini, truffle oil, bocconcini and prosciutto crudo. For those who can appreciate a great pizza, Bellaggio embraces a home-style atmosphere with great traditional fare, and is a must for the to-do list.

Bar Alto Lamington Street

Bar Alto Lamington Street

Close your eyes, click your heels three times and say "there's no place like Sydney". Or just take the CityCat to New Farm Park, because in a town where a good water view is generally accompanied by a surf 'n' turf smorgasbord, and where dining at a performing arts venue is something you previously only did after a matinee with Nanna, Bar Alto is dramatically removed from your Brisbane preconceptions. On the first floor of the Powerhouse Live Arts Centre, with the precinct's trademark graffitied brick and concrete walls, it's also about as unpretentiously chic as it gets (on a council budget, anyway). The spectacularly open kitchen means there's as much theatre in the galley as there is on the stage outside, but the real star here is the food.
Head chef Pablo Tordesillas - formerly of Otto in Sydney - is Spanish, but the heart of his kitchen is unmistakably Italian. Raise a smug glass of Valpolicella to the folks aboard the Kookaburra Queen; exorcise your demons by devouring a voodoo-doll-like quail saltimbocca; or test your powers of strategy as you mobilise cutlery forces towards your partner's perfect goat ragu. If half a bottle of Chianti Classico doesn't get you giggling, then the ridiculously low prices will, and if there's a better restaurant manager than Rachael Duffield they must be working the floor at Alain Ducasse; with her at the helm, service is polished and friendly and standards never slip.
